SAINT LOUIS ZOO SADDENED BY DEATH OF SEA LION "BENNIE"
Bennie, one of the stars of the Saint Louis Zoo's First Bank Sea Lion Show, died on Friday, April 18, at the Zoo's Lichtenstein Sea Lion Arena at approximately 1:30 p.m..
Bennie had been under veterinary care and had not been performing for the past two weeks.
A necropsy will be performed by the Zoo's pathologist. The Zoo's veterinary team will not have full information regarding the cause of death until they get results from histopathology in several weeks.
Bennie was born at the Saint Louis Zoo's Sea Lion Basin on June 15, 2002, to parents Hide and Roland. Weighing in at a hefty 500 pounds, Bennie had been part of the Sea Lion Show for seven years. Throughout his life, Bennie had received routine health care.
A leading ambassador for the Zoo, Bennie was both the one of the stars of the Sea Lion Show and the animal who happily kissed everyone from celebrities to average citizens. He will long be remembered for his loving nature, remarkable performances and high spirits, which delighted audiences.
The Saint Louis Zoo's Sea Lion Shows will continue this weekend as scheduled. Show times are 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. Admission is $4.00. Children under two are free. General admission to the Saint Louis Zoo is free.
