Wild populations of this frog are currently threatened by habitat loss, illegal collection for the pet trade, and a fungal outbreak that's destroying many amphibian populations in Central America and around the world. Without human intervention, it's possible that this species may be extinct within the next five years.
Help is at hand: Project Golden Frog was created as a pro-active conservation program with efforts focused on field studies, captive breeding, and education. This is a collaboration involving zoos, universities and government agencies -- all working together to save these frogs.
