Yellow-and-blue Poison Dart Frog

y&b_poison_dart_frog_sm.jpg: Yellow-and-blue poison dart frog
Range: Northern South America
Habitat: Lowland rain forests
Conservation Status: Common
Scientific Name: Dendrobates tinctorius

The bright yellow stripes down the back of this colorful frog help the animal stand out easily in the darkness of the rainforest. The colors warn predators that its skin is toxic.

Yellow-and-blue poison dart frogs live on or close to the ground, often on vines. They feed on ants and other small insects.

Unlike other types of poison frogs, these animals aren't used by native people to supply poison for blowgun darts. Still, they're highly prized in the pet trade.
