Range: Eastern North America, from southern Canada to Arkansas
Habitat: Lakes, rivers, streams
Conservation Status: Common
Scientific Name: Necturus maculosus

The mudpuppy is a special kind of salamander that never really grows up.

Most other salamanders lose their gills as they mature from larva to adult -- a transformation that allows the animals to move out of water onto land. But mudpuppies don’t lose their gills, and so are limited to a life in the water.

Mudpuppies live in the lakes and rivers of eastern North America. They eat fish, crayfish, and snails.
