These birds feed as all plovers do -- by taking a few rapid steps then stabbing at their prey. They also engage in typical plover-like foraging behavior as they hunt for insects, including foot-trembling and pecking at the water surface. Blacksmith plovers are very territorial and solitary nesters during breeding season, but at other times they may form flocks of up to 100 birds.
