Lilac-breasted rollers are commonly seen sitting atop bare or dead trees. They live in scrublands, where they feed on insects and small lizards. Rollers are strongly territorial and only live singly or in pairs. They nest in holes of stumps, trees and sometimes anthills.

These birds are called rollers after their spectacular airborne tumbling rolls, which they perform during courtship and to confuse predators.
