Andean Tinamou

Range: Western South America
Habitat: Grassy slopes, scrub, meadows
Conservation Status: Common
Scientific Name: Nothoprocta pentlandii

These small birds can survive the frigid climate of the high Andes Mountains because of their plump, compact body style.  Tinamous stay very still in the face of danger, and will only fly from their hiding place when seriously alarmed. They blend in so well with their grassy habitat that they're hard to see - - only their mellow whistles give them away.

Did You Know?

The male tinamou not only sits on the glossy, dark brown eggs but he also cares for the chicks.
