King Penguin

penguins_king_sm.jpg: King penguins
Range: Antarctic region
Habitat: Open ocean, rocky shoreline
Conservation Status: Common
Scientific Name: Aptenodytes patagonicus

This handsome bird is one of the largest penguin species. It weighs about 33 pounds, second only to the emperor penguin. The king penguin's large size helps it cope with the extreme Antarctic cold and allows it to dive deeper than most penguins.
