Zebra Finch

zebra_finch_sm.jpg: Zebra finch
Range: Australia
Habitat: Varied, including grasslands, shrubs, and woodlands
Conservation Status: Common
Scientific Name: Taeniopygia guttata

These brightly-colored birds travel in large flocks in the wide open grasslands of Australia.  They are on the move much of the time, searching for seeds, greens, vegetables and fruits.  They also eat small insects, which they can sometimes catch in the air.   Not only do zebra finches fly in large groups, they also build their nests very close to each other in low thorn bushes.  Pairs usually bond for life. Their sociable nature and lively behavior make them popular pets.
