Greater Roadrunner

roadrunner_sm.jpg: Roadrunner
Range: Southwestern and south central United States and Mexico
Habitat: Desert scrub, chaparral, arid open woodlands, brush
Conservation Status: Common
Scientific Name: Geococcyx californianus
This desert dweller can actually fly although, as its name suggests, it usually prefers to run. It is specially adapted to warm itself after a cold desert night. The completely dark wings and exposed areas of the skin on its back absorb sunlight quickly to warm the skin and underlying blood vessels. Roadrunners eat a large variety of small animals and are especially good at catching lizards.

Did You Know?

The greater roadrunner is a member of the cuckoo family.
