Bucktoothed Tetra

Range: Guyana and Brazil (in South America)
Habitat: In and near large rivers
Conservation Status: Not Listed by IUCN
Scientific Name: Exodon paradoxus

This is not your normal aquarium tetra – a bucktoothed tetra could give a piranha fighting lessons! This aggressive fish lives in large schools in the rivers of Brazil and Guyana, where it’s known for its extreme predatory habits. If it cannot swallow its prey, it will use its “bucktoothed” mouth to start tearing the scales and flesh from the animal anyway. Local people in South America reportedly use the tetras to help them clean their dishes – they merely set their dirty plates in the river and the fish nibble off every scrap of food!
