This small tree-dwelling lizard is covered with bony-plated scales that make it look and feel as rigid as an alligator. A fold on each side of its body allows the mid-section to expand when it eats a lot of food or is pregnant (in females). This lizard makes its home in bromeliads (plants that grow on other plants) as high as 130 feet off the ground. Extensive logging in its forest habitats has put it in danger of extinction.
