New Caledonia Gecko

newc_gecko_sm.jpg: New Caledonia gecko
Range: New Caledonia (island off the eastern coast of Australia)
Habitat: Forests
Conservation Status: Not listed by IUCN
Scientific Name: Rhacodactylus auriculatus

Some unusual features distinguish this species. For one, it has large incisor-like teeth used to capture and eat other lizards. Its diet also includes spiders, insects and pollen. Some other geckos eat lizards, and some feed on pollen, but this combination of foods is unique to this species. It is similar to other geckos in having toe pads covered with tiny hair-like bristles that provide traction on almost any surface.
