Pitvipers are named for the shallow "pit" found between the eye and nostril on both sides of the head. Each of these pits -- sensitive to infrared light -- can detect the heat of warm-blooded prey. This helps the snake strike its victim. The Philippine pitviper occurs in several different colors, ranging from brown to silver to various shades of yellow.
