This animal's range is limited to Sawu Island -- only 9.3 miles long and 6.2 miles across at its widest point. Over the course of its life, the python undergoes a radical change in appearance. As a hatchling, its color is reddish-brown or terra-cotta with white markings. As it ages, its color darkens until it becomes uniformly blackish-brown to black.
