|Geographical Range||Southeastern Asia|
|Habitat||Rivers, streams, lakes, swamps, marshes, and surrounding lands|
|Scientific Name||Heosemys grandis|
This large turtle shares the sad fate of many Asian turtle species. Though once common throughout Southeast Asia, it has fallen victim to the large-scale trade in food and medicinal products. In recent years, its numbers have declined dramatically. Several million Asian turtles and tortoises are collected for the food, drug and pet trades every year. They are being taken at a rate far greater than their species can sustain, threatening their very survival.
