Geographical Range Southern and southwestern Madagascar (island off the east coast of Africa)
Habitat Dry woodlands, brushlands
Scientific Name Geochelone radiata
Conservation Status Threatened

This beautiful-patterned tortoise prefers to live in areas with grasses and thorn bushes rather than in dense vegetation. The radiated tortoise is found only in Madagascar, where the local people consider it sacred and protect it. But non-native people who collect the tortoise for food and other uses are causing a severe decline in the animals’ numbers.

Did You Know?

Female radiated tortoises lay up to 12 eggs in a flask-shaped nest that they dig with their hind feet.
