How does the WCC fulfill its mission?

The WCC ensures that contraceptives are safe and effective by:

  • maintaining databases that monitor all contraceptive use in all mammalian species
  • analyzing data on the efficacy and safety of contraceptives
  • conducting comprehensive pathologic examinations on reproductive tracts to detect if deleterious effects are associated with contraceptives

The WCC helps bring new contraceptive methods to the zoo, aquarium, and wildlife communities by:

  • initiating and coordinating research trials of promising new methods
  • monitoring research trials and providing data to the FDA
  • working with commercial partners to make new contraceptives available and affordable

The WCC assists AZA Species Survival Plan coordinators, mammal curators, wildlife managers and veterinarians in choosing and administering appropriate contraceptives by:

  • annually producing and distributing up-to-date contraceptive recommendations for all mammals
  • providing AZA Species Survival Plan coordinators and Taxon Advisory Group chairs with species-specific contraception guidelines for husbandry manuals
  • providing both telephone and electronic "Help Lines" to assist animal managers with specific contraceptive questions or concerns
  • maintaining a website with the latest wildlife contraceptive information
