THE HIDDEN WORLD

Grades 5-8
Program length: 90 minutes

Using dissecting microscopes, students discover the invisible realm of the animal kingdom. Biofacts and other preserved specimens are examined to learn about animal adaptations and lifestyles. In this class, students learn how scientists use microscopes.

Conservation Classes

INTRODUCTION TO ZOO CAREERS

Grades 5-8
Program length: 45 minutes
Fee: $65 (ZMD $50)

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to take care of exotic animals? In this class, students will learn about the daily activities of an animal keeper, Zoo veterinarian, and other Zoo professionals. Through activities and live animals, students will become familiar with the various duties and responsibilities of those who work with animals at the Zoo.

INTRODUCTION TO ZOO KEEPING

Grades 5-8
Program length: 45 minutes

Have you ever wondered what zoo keepers do all day? Do they just shovel, hose, and feed? We will explore the many different aspects of being a keeper through discussions, live animals and more. This class will also provide important tips to give you an exciting head start at becoming a zoo keeper!

INTRODUCTION TO ZOO NUTRITION

Grades 5-8
Program length: 45 minutes
Fee: $65 (ZMD $50)
Offered September through May

Do anteaters at the Zoo really eat ants? Are the lions fed zebras? While zookeepers are responsible for the daily care of the animals, the nutritionists are the diet experts. Come and learn about different dietary needs, and how diets are prepared and delivered to each of our animals.

INTRODUCTION TO ZOO VETERINARY CARE

Grades 5-8
Program length: 45 minutes
Fee: $65 (ZMD $50)

What happens when a hyena has a toothache, or when a sea lion has an injured flipper? In this class, students will learn about some challenges of being a Zoo Veterinarian, as well as what steps they can start taking now to prepare for a potential future in veterinary care. Live animals, video clips, and biofacts will be presented.
