1962

The beginning of the 1960s brought minor changes, repairs, modernizing and a small children's contact area (between the central plaza and the south lake). In 1961 the Aquatic House opened, and the Portland Cement building was demolished to make way for the construction of the Zooline Railroad. The golden spike was driven in August, 1963.

Two years later, the lakes had been redesigned. By 1967, the 1904 Flight Cage, after extensive renovation which included an elevated walkway, was again opened to the public.

The children's contact area proved to be both successful and inefficient. The Charles H. Yalem Children's Zoo (and nursery) was constructed in 1969 in the location which once had several cages of small mammals, better known as "the flats." At the same time and to the north, the Administration Building was built. Before then the offices were located in the Primate House, and the gift shop was located in the old elephant building.
