Learn More

In order to save animals, we need to know as much as we can about them.  But learning about endangered species doesn't have to be boring:

  • Tell your teacher or parent to take you to a Zoo, aquarium, state park, or nature center.   These are great places to learn about wild animals and their needs.
  • Take an animal class at the Saint Louis Zoo, either with your family or your school group.  We have plenty of fun ways to learn about animals and nature.  Check out our programs at www.stlzoo.org/education
  • Become a Keeper for a Day at the Zoo and learn what's involved in caring for animals.  Check out this cool program at http://www.stlzoo.org/education/programsforindividualsfami/keeperforadayspring.htm
  • Check your local library and bookstores for kids' books on zebras and other African wildlife.  For starters, we recommend:
    • Zebra by Caroline Arnold
    • ZOOBOOKS: Zebras, published by Wildlife Education
    • The Natural History of Zebras by Dorcas MacClintock (for older kids)

Start a Conservation Project

Kids in a number of St. Louis area schools have started after-school clubs, either to help endangered species or raise funds for people who live near them.

  • Launch your own Club Conservation.
  • Start a fund drive for Grevy's zebras or for Kenya schoolchildren.

Let us know if we can send you more information and examples of how to start your own Club Conservation at your school.

Help Other Conservation Groups

The Saint Louis Zoo is one of many groups working to help endangered African wildlife.  You can support our work, or help other groups too.  To help our Zoo:

  • Have your family become a member of the Saint Louis Zoo.  A membership helps support the Zoo's wildlife conservation projects in St. Louis and around the globe: www.stlzoo.org/membership
  • Adopt a Grevy's zebra at the Saint Louis Zoo. When you adopt an animal, your donation goes towards the animal's care and daily feeding: www.stlzoo.org/supportthezoo/zooparentsprogram

Make Your Home Wildlife-Friendly

  • Protect wild monkeys, birds and other animals - Don't adopt exotic pets
  • Protect wild birds - Keep your cats indoors and your dogs on a leash
  • Be a responsible pet owner - Spay and neuter your dogs and cats
  • Eat responsibly - Ask your family to buy sustainably-harvested fish and shellfish, shade-grown coffee to protect tropical habitats
  • Keep toxins out of animal habitats - Ask your family to use fewer pesticides and fertilizers in your yard, buy more organic foods and make sure your family disposes of motor oils, paints, etc., properly
  • Keep dangerous items out of animal habitats - Pick up litter, snip six-pack rings
  • Make your yard wildlife-friendly - Make sure your family gardens with native plants and removes invader species; provide feeders and fresh water
  • Protect the world's forests - Ask your family to buy sustainably-harvested wood products like FSC-labeled lumber and furniture
  • Protect local habitats - Take part in river cleanups, litter pickups, invasive plant removal programs
  • Take less from the environment -- use less new stuff, recycle old stuff
