The Saint Louis Zoo has formed a zoo-wide Resource Conservation & Recycling Committee to study energy and environmental practices that will conserve valuable resources. As a conservation organization, we work hard to save wild things in wild places around the globe. At the same time, it is important to look at our recycling efforts here at the Zoo and to save on water usage, energy, landfill space and building materials. See our 2009 Sustainability Report.
Recycling Adds Up
We've been actively recycling for years. We also place recycle bins around the Zoo grounds where visitors can help us by recycling maps, bottles and paper. In 2005, we recycled:
- 121,027 pounds of cardboard
- 390 pounds of aluminum
- 27,385 pounds of paper
- 5,365 pounds of plastic
- 400,000 pounds of manure
- 35,000 gallons of used cooking oil
- 85 pounds of batteries
