2020 Inspector of the Year

Luis Padilla, DVM, Vice President of Animal Collections at the Saint Louis Zoo, was selected by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) as one of its Inspectors of the Year for 2020. The AZA conducts inspections at its member institutions to ensure those zoos meet the highest standards of animal care and welfare. The AZA has a team of professionals who volunteer and carry out the inspections at the zoos, which takes an enormous amount of time and effort. Dr. Padilla’s selection was based on his long and dedicated history as an AZA Accreditation Inspector and the consistent high quality of his work. Congratulations Dr. Padilla!

Happy Birthday Utamu!

This Sunday, chimpanzee Utamu will celebrate her 19th birthday. The new mother and her newborn daughter, Raven, continue to bond behind the scenes in a private maternity area. Both mother and baby are doing well. A public debut date is not known at this time. Happy Birthday, Utamu!

Utamu’s pregnancy was documented in Utamu: Path to Motherhood. Visit stlzoo.org/utamu to follow her journey to motherhood.
