#NationalBirdDay

Today is #NationalBirdDay!

The Saint Louis Zoo traces its origins to the 1904 World’s Fair Flight Cage. Did you know that the City of St. Louis purchased the large cage for $3,500 in 1904 after the World's Fair? The purchase did not include the birds, so the Zoo paid $7.50 for a pair of Mandarin ducks and $20 for four Canada geese. Some local residents donated owls to add to the collection. Today, the Flight Cage is home to the Zoo’s immersion exhibit, the Edward K. Love Conservation Foundation Cypress Swamp.  Guests can find over 21 species of North American birds that thrive in cypress swamps along the Mississippi River including the great egret.
