Successful reproductive management is an integral component of AZA Animal Programs. Controlled breeding of designated pairs ensures that both the genetic and demographic goals of the population are met.
As stewards of our animals, zoo professionals are responsible for providing the highest standards of care--a responsibility that includes ensuring we do not breed more animals than can be properly cared for.
Contraception is a proven, humane tool for animal management. A contraception method that is safe and effective for one species, however, may not be appropriate for another. Monitoring the safety and efficacy of contraceptives used in all mammalian species is best done through a single, coordinated body. This role is fulfilled by the AZA Reproductive Management Center.
