Due to the popularity of these programs, please list as many program choices as possible, if using the mail-in registration form.  Include a separate sheet if necessary.  Participants will be registered for only one date.

 

  • Engineer-for-a-Day

    For participants ages 7 to adult

    Come aboard and learn to be a Zooline Railroad engineer! Get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to be a part of one of the top attractions at the Saint Louis Zoo. Participants will:

    • Tour the Zooline Railroad maintenance shed
    • Help an engineer with daily morning activities
    • Participate in daily train safety checks with an engineer
    • Ride with an engineer on the locomotive*, blowing the whistle and ringing the bell
    • Tear tickets at the railroad stations and help passengers board the train
    • Help announce a narrated tour on the train (optional)

    To look the part, you will receive a nametag, Zoo bandana, engineer cap and will enjoy a complimentary lunch with a Zooline Railroad engineer. Two complimentary train tickets will be issued so your accompanying family members can join in on the fun. You will also take home a special certificate, suitable for framing, as a reminder of your day on the Saint Louis Zoo’s railroad!

  • A Day with the Rays

    For students entering 2nd - 8th grades

    Join the Saint Louis Zoo’s team of amazing keepers by participating in A Day with the Rays!  In your first year as an aquatics keeper for the day, we will give you an official name tag and T-shirt to take home.  Jump right in with preparing diets and help maintain the exhibit to keep it looking nice and the animals healthy.  As the new expert, you will help visitors learn about our exhibit, how to touch and feed the stingrays, and touch the sharks.  Please wear a T-shirt, khaki or jean shorts, and old closed-toed shoes.  Bring a bottle of water and a camera.  A Saint Louis Zoo snack and lunch will be provided.  Get wet, smell like fish and have a ton of fun with A Day with the Rays! 

    Note: We do not recommend this program for children with shellfish allergies.  Please mention any latex allergies on the registration form.

    Advanced Day with the Rays

    For students entering 2nd - 8th grades, who have attended A Day with the Rays

    Dive deeper into the science and career of an aquatics keeper.  In your second year or more of Day with the Rays, continue your work by participating in animal husbandry duties.  Once the daily tasks are accomplished, you will explore fish and cephalopod biology, perform advanced marine water quality monitoring, and, of course, have some time for fun and games.  It’s time to show off all that you learned from last time as well as pick up a few new tricks along the way. Please wear a T-shirt, khaki or jean shorts, and old closed-toed shoes.  Bring a bottle of water and a camera.  A Saint Louis Zoo snack and lunch will be provided.  Get wet, smell like fish and have even more fishy fun with Advanced Day with the Rays!  Participants must have attended A Day with the Rays.

  • Keeper-for-a-Day (Summer)

    For students entering 3rd - 9th grades

    Have you ever wanted to be a zookeeper? Do you have a passion for animals? If so, join a Children's Zoo keeper for a day of zoo-keeping! You will work side by side with a keeper and learn to care for a variety of animals. You will prepare diets in the Children’s Zoo kitchen and help our keepers feed some of the animals. You will learn to handle a small mammal, bird or reptile and then present the animal to Children's Zoo visitors, describing that animal’s natural history and sharing some fun facts.  You will join the keepers for a staff meeting, break time and lunch. Please wear a T-shirt, khaki or jean shorts/pants and old shoes - you will get dirty! Bring a bottle of water and a camera, if you'd like. A Saint Louis Zoo name tag, snack and lunch will be provided.

  • Junior Sea Lion Trainer

    For participants ages 10 to adult

    Become a Junior Trainer at Sea Lion Sound!  Get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to be a part of one of the most exciting attractions at the Zoo. Work alongside a trainer to see how they care for and train the Zoo’s pinnipeds.

    Participants will have an opportunity to prepare fish diets for the animals, clean feeding buckets and feed an animal.  You will get wet and fishy!  Participants will get to take home a Saint Louis Zoo name tag and a commemorative souvenir from Sea Lion Sound.  Participants will also have the chance to participate in either the 11 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. Sea Lion Show.  Family members are encouraged to be available at show times to take pictures of the Junior Trainer in action.  Four complimentary tickets will be provided for your family and friends. Wear comfortable clothes and old close-toed shoes.  No flip-flops, please.  Bring a water bottle and a camera, if you would like.

  • Safari Guide-for-a-Day

    For participants entering 6th - 12th grades

    Learn the tricks of the trade for engaging with our guests and help us educate others about animals!  You will see firsthand what interpreters do at the Zoo.  Your day will include a mini tour, time in the library researching your animal, practice time, lunch and then time out with our visitors.  A go-pro camera will catch all the action of you engaging our visitors and will be stored on a flash drive for you to take home.  Wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes and khaki shorts or pants.  We will provide a shirt for the day and a name tag to keep!  Participants meet in the lower level of The Living World.
