• An outreach program is an educational, interactive program that brings a small part of the Zoo to you! We provide programming for anyone, from ages 2-102 (and beyond), including schools, libraries, senior groups, scout groups, day cares and numerous other community organizations.

Education outreach programs are 45 minutes in length.  Early childhood programs are available in 30-minute sessions, provided a minimum of two programs per visit are booked. We can also offer booth programs without live animals for longer events, as well as assembly programs for large groups.

  • When traveling with live animals, Zoo personnel must stay within a 45-minute drive time radius of the Zoo.

  • For the safety and well-being of our animals, our minimum group size is 10, with a maximum group size of 30 (children and adults). For groups of larger than 30, we do offer larger assembly programs. For our programs for children with special needs, our minimum group size is eight, with a maximum of 16.

For childcare facilities, we do require that adult/child ratios be maintained at all times during the program(s). See Missouri Code of State Regulations 19 CSR 30-62.112 Staff/Child Ratios or Illinois Administrative Code Licensing Standards for Day Care Centers Section 407.190 Grouping and Staffing.

  • The minimum age for preschool programs is 3 years. Please call to inquire about "meet and greet" opportunities for 2 year old's, that can be added to formal program bookings.

  • Live animals are part of most of our programs, except for large assembly programs and booth programs. Also, travel distance (more than 45-minute drive) sometimes prevents us from bringing live animals. Extreme weather conditions can also restrict our ability to bring live animals to you, as the health and well-being of our animals and instructors is a top priority.

If your program included live animals and we are not able to bring them, we would work with you to reschedule or issue a refund for the program.

  • We have a large group of animals that are approved to travel off grounds. Due to the needs of our animals, we cannot guarantee any specific animal species or type for your class. All animals presented will be appropriate for the program theme chosen. The animals we bring are small animals that are housed and cared for in our Emerson Children’s Zoo.

  • For groups of less than 30, audience participants can touch select animals, at the discretion of the Zoo instructor. For groups larger than 30, we can bring live animals for participants to observe, but not to touch. Pictures are always welcome!

  • The further in advance programs are requested, the better chance you have of getting your preferred dates and times.  Two months booking notice is strongly preferred and is required if paying by check.  We cannot book any programs with less than a month’s notice.  Please click here for the request form.  Please provide several date options as we do book up quickly!  We will not ‘hold’ dates – programs are booked on a first-come, first-served basis.  Your request is not confirmed until someone from the Zoo contacts you.

  • Groups within the Zoo-Museum District of St. Louis City and County receive discounted pricing on some programs.  Please click here for our program fees.  Please note:  all programs require full payment to be received before the program date.

  • For the safety and well-being of the animals, we must be indoors in a temperature-controlled (e.g. – air conditioned/heated) building.  We must be in a secured room, not a public place like a lobby or a hallway.  Examples of approved spaces include: classrooms, libraries, theaters, cafeterias (with no food or drink present), and meeting rooms.  We cannot present programs at private residences.

  • No.  We ask that no food or drink, besides water, be present during the program.

  • Please notify us of any other animals that may be present at your location.  The health and safety of all animals are of top priority for us.
